Residence Visa for Subordinate Professional Activity
The D1 Visa is designed to allow non-EU workers to reside and work in Portugal. It is one of several categories within the long-term residence visas that Portugal has to offer.
To be eligible for this visa, the applicant must have an employment contract with a Portuguese company or a promise of an employment contract. The contract must meet the minimum standards established by Portuguese law, including salary and working conditions.
The D1 visa is initially issued for a period that corresponds to the duration of the employment contract, but generally does not exceed one year. It can be renewed as required, as long as the conditions of employment remain the same.
Those interested must first obtain a visa from a Portuguese consulate or embassy in their country of origin. The process includes the presentation of various documents, such as a valid passport, an employment contract, proof of accommodation in Portugal and a criminal record certificate.
After arriving in Portugal with a D1 Visa, the visa holder must apply for a Residence Permit for Work. This authorization is necessary to confirm the right to reside permanently and continue working in the country.
D1 visa holders can live and work in Portugal, access health services, education and other public services. In addition, after five years of legal residence, they can apply for permanent residence or even Portuguese citizenship.
